Are we about to replace dogs with AI-driven robots?
For 20,000 years, domestic wolves have been more than just pets. They’ve been hunters, herders, protectors, and companions. But what happens when technology catches up? Could AI and robotics change the role of dogs forever?
Dogs were the first domestic animal and one of our oldest human technologies. We selectively bred them to perform specific tasks, from herding livestock to guarding our homes. But what if future technology makes these jobs obsolete? With plant-based diets and lab-grown meat on the rise, herding dogs may no longer be needed. And with robotic dogs now assisting in law enforcement, search and rescue, and even firefighting, real dogs, though cheaper, may no longer be the best option for such tasks. After all, no one wants dogs to get hurt.
But the biggest shift might not even come from robots, but from genetics. With new and upcoming gene editing technologies, future dog owners may be able to design their pets to be the perfect size, color, and temperament.
But what if the future isn’t organic at all? Imagine an AI-driven robotic dog with the loyalty of a shepherd, the intelligence of a Border Collie and the lifespan of a machine. Would we still need real dogs?
